As I mentioned on Monday, Morgan asked me to do two posts. Today, we have a character spotlight for George. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway!

Character Spotlight: George

Appearance: Dark hair and brown eyes. He is tall and lean.

Time Period: 1800

History: George grew up on a Georgia plantation in the early days of America. As the second son, it was unlikely he would ever be master of Creighton Hill, thus, he wished to go to sea, a wish that was denied him. He often helped out the slaves on the plantation, never feeling himself above them. He is a loyal patriot, and is quite devoted to the idea of a representative republic.

Author’s Notes: George was named after George Washington. Because of that, he was intended to be a great leader. I didn’t know it for a long time, but it took George much to gain the skills to be a true leader. His was the first story other than the “modern” Hubbards that I wrote, and it stretched out much longer than I thought it would. As I wrote, I learned of his insecurities, after all, he was the first Hubbard to disappear, and of the character flaws he would have to overcome.

George is a very “stick to the plan” sort of guy. Spontaneity really bothers him. This actually causes him some problems and deep regrets. It’s kind of spoilery, so I’d better not say what those regrets are. Since he’s the oldest Time Captive, he feels like he has a lot of responsibility, and that puts a lot of pressure on him. It also makes him afraid to act. I can somewhat relate to George in that, when there’s a lot of pressure to be in charge and make the right decisions, it’s hard to make those decisions for fear of being wrong.

One other thing I loved about writing George was his time period. I love the colonial era and early America, and so it was fun to pull him out of that and see a fantasy world through those eyes. Things like the Salem Witch Trials are more recent in history and more relevant, since there are still lots of Puritans, and so I enjoyed how certain circumstances brought thoughts of that into the forefront of his mind. I’m kind of a history nerd. What can I say? And his fierce patriotism. I just love it. Now that I think about it, there’s a lot in George I can relate to, and I’m excited for him to finally meet the world. It’s quite different now from the one in which he grew up. 😛
