As I prepared to publish this novella, I felt very rusty. And then I realized why. The last book I published was All the Way My Savior Leads back in MAY! That is a long time for me in recent years. It’s good to be back in the publishing realm again.
My current book was inspired by a couple of minor characters who first showed up in Lily of the Valley. It was first published in an anthology I was part of entitled Where the Light May Lead. I have since updated and edited it. A few things are different, but not many. And all the changes were made after I started writing He Hideth My Soul (Orphans of the West #3)
And now here we are. I am excited to present this novella. It was fun to write and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Of course, as with all of my blog tours, there is a giveaway, so make sure you scroll through and enter it. I’m also including an exclusive excerpt you won’t want to miss. But first, here’s a little bit about the book.
About the Book
Eleanor Miller has never lacked for anything, but she wanted to become a schoolteacher anyway to instill the love of learning into other children. Unlike what happened with her brother, Grover.
Grover hated school and authority. He rebelled any change he could. When he almost killed a man, their family was torn apart and he was disowned.
Eleanor understands her father’s decision, but she worries she will never see Grover again. Will she find out how sweet it is to trust Jesus in everything no matter what happens or will she stop trusting Him completely?

Patrick waited with Eleanor inside the store. “Ye’ll be back, won’t ye?”
Eleanor bit back a smile. “Yes, Mr. O’Toole. For the fifth time, I will be back in a few weeks for the second term. I will send a telegram to let you know when I will arrive.”
Patrick scratched his nose. “It’s sorry I am to see ye go, even if ’tis for but a short time. Ye’ve practically become family and have done a world of good for all of us.”
Eleanor turned toward him. “Mr. O’Toole, it’s you who have done me good. I cannot imagine a life without this small community anymore. Even if I don’t teach here for the rest of my life, your town will have a special place in my heart forever.”
Patrick took her in his arms. “Ye’ll always be welcome here, even if ye aren’t the teacher.”
“Thank you.”
“Ah. And it looks like yer ride be here.” He paused. “And ’tis not yer pa.”
Eleanor pulled herself out of his embrace. “Father cannot always get away for long. Thank you for everything, Mr. O’Toole. I will see you again in a few weeks.”
“Farewell, Lass. May yer Christmas be cheery and warm and yer heart be light as ye spend time with yer family.”
Eleanor blinked the tears out of her eyes. “Thank you. I wish you the same.”
She picked up her bag and hurried out to the buggy. “Good morning, Mr. Connor.”
“Miss Miller,” he said in a gruff voice. “Your father said to tell you he wishes he could be here rather than sending a footman after you.”
Eleanor laughed. “That sounds just like him, but I don’t mind. I know he’s a busy man.”
Mr. Connor helped Eleanor into the buggy and climbed in. As he started the horses toward Fort Wayne, he said, “I maybe shouldn’t say this, but you’ll find out soon enough. Your father would have been able to come, but young Mr. Miller has been causing trouble again, and Mr. Miller thought it best to stay and try to take him in hand.”
Eleanor sighed. “I see. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. Though I had hoped…” her voice trailed off as her smile faded. Dear Mr. O’Toole, I fear your blessing may not come true. I’ll still do my best to keep things as cheery as may be.
Mr. Connor was a good footman but not a good conversationalist. They were silent most of the way back home. Although Eleanor did like to talk, she didn’t mind the silence this time. It gave her some extra time to think, pray, and meditate on God’s promises.
Two days after they left Wabash, Mr. Connor drove the buggy up to the house. No one came out to greet them, and a foreboding feeling came over her. Lord, help me through this season, whatever happens. You have proved Your trustworthiness over and over. No matter what, I will try to trust in You.

It was hard for me to trust God when my family and I were called to come off the mission field (everything was going fine, but God said to leave). I really didn’t want to leave England but I tried to look and trust God anyways.
That does sound challenging, Victoria! Thank you for sharing.
It has been hard for me to trust God recently because I have been looking for a job and have applied so many places, but no one has contacted me back. God is teaching me that I need to trust him through this difficult time.

That is a hard thing. Good for you to keep trusting in God, though!
