Audiobook Review: The Princess Spy by Melanie Dickerson

Title: The Princess Spy
Written By: Melanie Dickerson
Narrated by: Jude Mason
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction/Fairy Tale Retelling
Recommended Ages: 13 & up

Introduction:

After finishing the fourth book in this series and meeting Margaretha made me want to learn more about her. So when I read the description for this book, I knew I wanted to read it. This book did not disappoint. I loved Margaretha’s story.

Characters: 1/1

Margaretha and Colin were great characters! I loved their interaction and how the language barrier worked between them. Margaretha knew some English, but Colin didn’t know hardly any German. And the fun they had with the language (especially Colin calling her a flibbertigibbet and telling her that meant being a good spy) was priceless!

Dialogue: 1/1

I already touched on this a little, but the dialogue between all of these characters was great! Melanie did an amazing job writing the talkativeness of Margaretha.

Plot/Storyline: .5/1

I liked the majority of this plot and storyline. But there were a few things that bugged me. One, I knew this was supposed to be a retelling of a fairy tale, but I couldn’t figure out which one and then decided maybe it was two? I think it was supposed to be a take on the Princess and the Frog, but I’m still not sure. That bugged me for a lot of the book. Thus the lower rank.

Overall Writing Quality: 1/1

From what I could tell from listening to the book, the writing quality was well done. I didn’t notice anything that didn’t make sense or that pulled me out of the book.

Un-Put-Down-Ability: 1/1

I couldn’t listen to the book non-stop, but there were definitely many times when I wanted to just keep on listening so I could find out what happened. The ending was great! Although, the romance did happen a little quick in my opinion, but since they were in such an interesting situation, I think in this case, it was somewhat justified.

Conclusion: 4.5/5

If you like medieval romance, you will like this book. Especially if you don’t like super mushy romance because they don’t get too mushy until about 2/3rds through the book. I think it was a good book and the narrator did a good job, too.
